Does CPP Disability reduce my LTD payments?
Usually yes. Most group and private LTD policies in Canada offset (subtract) CPP-D from your LTD benefit dollar-for-dollar. Your total income stays roughly the same, but the insurer pays less once CPP-D is approved.
Why does my LTD insurer require me to apply for CPP-D?
Because the policy lets the insurer offset CPP-D, they benefit when you receive it, so they require you to apply. If you are approved, the insurer may recover an overpayment for months it paid the full amount before CPP-D started.
Are children's CPP-D benefits offset too?
Often not. Many LTD policies specifically exclude the CPP-D children's benefit from the offset, so you may keep that amount on top of your net LTD. Check your policy wording.
Do I come out ahead getting both LTD and CPP-D?
Your total monthly income usually stays about the same because of the offset, but CPP-D can be indexed to inflation, is taxed differently, and continues under its own rules, so pursuing it still matters.
