Most states use a points system where moving violations add points to your driving record. Accumulating too many points within a set period (typically 12–24 months) triggers a licence suspension or revocation. Each state has its own scale — California suspends at 4 points in 12 months, while Florida's threshold is 12 points in 12 months.

This varies by state. In most states, points remain on your record for 1–3 years from the date of the violation. In California, points stay for 3 years (or 7 years for DUI and serious offences). In New York, points expire after 18 months. Insurance companies may look back further when calculating premiums.

Many states allow point reduction through traffic school. In California, attending a DMV-approved traffic school can mask a single point for 18 months. Some states offer point reduction for maintaining a clean record for a set period. Points cannot be directly removed for serious offences like DUI.
