Impairment Rating Payout Calculator — United States

After maximum medical improvement, a physician assigns a percentage impairment using the AMA Guides. Most states multiply that percentage by a statutory number of weeks (for the whole body or a specific part) and pay those weeks at about two-thirds of your average weekly wage, capped at the state permanent disability maximum.

It varies by state. Some states mandate the 5th Edition, others the 6th Edition, and a few use their own rating schedule. The edition matters because different editions can produce different percentages for the same injury, which directly changes your payout.

Yes. If you believe the rating understates your impairment, you can obtain an independent medical evaluation and dispute the rating through your state workers' comp board. Because each percentage point translates into weeks of benefits, a rating dispute can significantly change the payout.

No. Many use a weeks-times-rate method, but some states multiply the impairment percentage by a fixed statutory dollar value, and others base permanent partial disability on lost earning capacity rather than pure impairment. Always confirm your state's specific formula.
