How much is VAC Pain and Suffering Compensation per month?
Monthly Pain and Suffering Compensation is a percentage of the maximum monthly amount based on your disability assessment. At the current-year rate the maximum monthly at 100 percent is about $1,243, and a 50 percent assessment pays roughly half that. Payments are tax-free.
Does VAC pay more for dependents?
No. Unlike the US VA, Pain and Suffering Compensation is based solely on your disability assessment percentage and does not increase for a spouse or children. Family needs are addressed through separate programs such as the Income Replacement Benefit.
Can I take a lump sum instead of monthly payments?
Yes. Veterans Affairs Canada lets you choose a lump-sum payment or lifetime monthly payments of equal actuarial value. You can also convert part of a previously received lump sum to monthly payments.
Is Pain and Suffering Compensation taxable?
No. Pain and Suffering Compensation is a non-taxable benefit recognizing the impact of a service-related disability. It is separate from income-replacement benefits, which may be treated differently.
